For a long time, the VW Multivan/Transporter was considered the absolute top dog among compact vans and lifestyle buses. Mercedes recognised this gap in the market and presented the first generation of the V-Class/Vito in 1996.
The V-Class, with the series designation W638, was technically similar in design to the VW T4 of the time. However, there were quality problems, so Mercedes' first bus offshoot was not a great success. This changed, however, with the second generation of the Mercedes van, which was now called the Viano. Its brother in the commercial vehicle segment, however, continued to be called Vito.
With the W639, Mercedes also changed the technical basis and switched from a front- to a rear-wheel drive platform. This is a clear differentiator from the VW Multivan. The rear-wheel drive platform also allowed large V6 engines to be fitted in the Viano. This made the Mercedes Bus more agile than its Bulli competitor from Wolfsburg.
The good technical basis then ultimately led the second generation of the Mercedes Bus to great sales success. With the V-Class W447, Mercedes continues the successful concept of the Viano. There is still either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, but Mercedes made the greatest progress in the assistance systems and the interior design.
This makes the V-Class the "Better Bus" for many bus fans today.
